Having lived remotely close to Lake Havasu Arizona most of my life, there have been many occasions where this desert vacation destination has been a topic of discussion. One of the more in-depth discussions I’ve had is with one of my good friends named Bryan whose parents were considering moving to Lake Havasu around 8 years ago. They made many visits and came to the conclusion that it was not a great place to live and claimed that it wasn’t even worth considering for a short vacation. While this may have been true at the time, a recent trip I made to Havasu has turned all my prior assumptions on their head. As best expressed through Trip Advisors vacation destination review forums:
Havasu offers “many places to stop and view [the] lake as well as hotels, shops, restaurants, and numerous water activities” that makes it “definitely a vacation spot”
As shown through the above quote, Havasu clearly has more to offer than people give it credit for and I’d like to take the time to highlight why that is the case. Starting with what vacation activities are available, the Lake Havasu official website points toward eight or more fun opportunities that are available to those visiting or looking to become residents. Looking at just the lake alone, one can partake in watersports, boating, fishing, and beach activities along with the lake’s expansive sandy beaches that surround it and Havasu’s center island. While the lake itself is a reason to come, Havasu also has many other activities available for when you are tired of being on the lake. For example, the beautiful desert scenery offers the ideal location for hiking, biking, and various other off-road/motorsports activities. Furthermore, the cities rapid growth has allowed it to develop many parks and other recreational areas like golf courses for people to enjoy. While these activities alone may be enough to convince one to check out Lake Havasu, there are even more reasons to visit.
For Instance, Havasu’s rapid growth has made it an ideal economy for many individuals looking for a permanent residence and those looking for a vacation destination. Specifically, Havasu has seen an almost 8% increase in median household income in the past year because of its recent population growth along with an expanding housing market to meet these new residents’ demands. Furthermore, property in Havasu has seen a near 9 % increase in value over the past year. While these factors creating a good economic scene is one upside of Havasu, Havasu also has benefited from a recently growing restaurant scene brought about by more tourists and residents. Two restaurants I visited personally called Niko’s Bar and Grill and Blue Chair both had great food and an active nighttime environment that many would enjoy. Not to mention, the area’s growth has brought many well know chain restaurants to Havasu along with other useful stores like Home Depot and Lowes.
Ultimately, it is clear that Lake Havasu has many different reasons that it should be on your travel list moving forward. It offers both land and water activities that make it an ideal spot for any weekend warriors or those just looking to enjoy the scenery. Furthermore, Havasu’s expanding housing market and economy make it a great spot for both residents and tourists looking for a new desert experience. Not to mention, the restaurant scene in Havasu is a subtle bonus that will improve the experience of anyone that visits the lake. Havasu is only gonna grow moving forward and I’d encourage anyone on the fence to plan a visit and see what’s going on in this recently established desert community.
I have never known anyone who is from Lake Havasu or nearby. I do know many people who visit regularly, and they love it. I would love to visit soon and explore the water and land activities. Personally, I am more pulled towards the water activities as I grew up wakeboarding and tubing. I am sure you also enjoy water activities, considering you think that this is a great place to live/vacation. I wonder if Bryan's family did not enjoy those types of activities, and that's why they didn't think it was worth it. It would make sense for people who like lake activities to go, but maybe it is not the best place for those who do not enjoy…
I will definitely add Lake Havasu to my vacation list. It does sound like it will make a good vacation spot. I wonder if there is live performance as I am a live performer myself and I love watching live performances.
Hi Riley,
I personally never visited Lake Havasu or Arizona at all and your writing definitely has me considering taking a trip. It is cool to see how there are a wide range of amazing destination spots sprinkled throughout the US that maybe do not get as much recognition as they deserve. Lake Havasu sounds like it has everything that one might look for in a vacation spot when it comes to outdoor activities, sites, and overall relaxation. I enjoyed reading about how passionate you are about a place near to where you grew up and were able to describe a location beautifully from a first-hand perspective. I appreciate how you have discussed a topic that will encourage people to…
Riley, this is a very interesting piece. Because I'm from St. Louis, a lot of people often ask me about the Lake of the Ozarks, and if it is a good place to vacation. I will say that the Netflix drama Ozarks depicts the surrounding area in a pretty bad light (rough around the edges). Although this part of Missouri is a hub for meth (don't love that), I grew up going to the Lake of the Ozarks with my family and friends. I haven't been in a while, but I do think that for a few days the lake can make a fun vacation location...Last Memorial Day, there was a lot of controversy over parties being thrown there during…
My girlfriend's parents bought a house in Havasu a couple years ago and it has become a regular vacation destination for us. I will say that Havasu Dunes Resort and Heat Hotel are both pretty good places to stay for anyone looking to visit. While I have yet to experience many of the more 'touristy' attractions that Havasu has to offer, I have spent a lot of time out on the lake. The many coves with rocks that the kids can jump off of and the friendly "neighbors" who will beach their boats alongside yours create a safe, wholesome environment. I know that the lake also has a thriving spring break scene but I haven't had the opportunity to experience.…
